How to Keep Essential Appliances Running During an Outage

Prioritize refrigeration, communications, lighting and other essential loads.

Start with the load, not the product

List what must run, its continuous wattage, startup surge where relevant, and how many hours it needs to operate. Energy is commonly estimated in watt-hours: watts multiplied by hours. Real systems also have conversion losses and reserve margins.

Separate the system into functions

A useful power system has an energy source, conversion or charging equipment, storage where needed, protection and controls, and the loads themselves. Keeping those functions separate prevents confusing a battery with a generator or an inverter with an energy source.

Compare practical tradeoffs

Evaluate documented output, usable energy, recharge options, noise, fuel dependence, portability, maintenance, expansion, environmental conditions and safety certification. The right configuration depends on the job rather than a universal winner.

Safety: Household electrical work and grid interconnection can be hazardous and regulated. Use appropriately rated equipment and qualified professional help where required.
